SKU Generator: Product Codes for Every Variant

Generate stock keeping units for every combination of product or category, colour or style, and size or variant, built from abbreviations, an optional prefix, a separator, and a running number, then copy them as CSV for a spreadsheet or a shop import.

SKU Generator: Product Codes for Every Variant: Every combination of the lists gets a code from the prefix, the first letters of each value, and a running number: 2 products, 2 colours, and 3 sizes make 12 SKUs, from AC-TSH-RED-S-001 to AC-HOO-NAV-L-012. Accents and spaces are removed, numbers such as sizes are kept whole, and repeated codes are flagged. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Every combination of the values becomes one SKU: the prefix, the first letters of each value, and an optional running number. Accents and spaces are dropped and numbers such as sizes kept whole. Keep SKUs short, use only letters, digits, and dashes, and never reuse a code for a different product, even after it is discontinued.

Starting a scheme

Put the most important attribute first, so related products sort together, and leave room to grow: three-digit numbers allow up to 999 variants of a pattern.

Barcodes

To make a scannable label for a code, use the barcode generator.

How to use it

  1. List the products, colours, and sizes, one per line.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good SKU?

Short, unique, made of letters, digits, and dashes, readable by people, and never reused for a different item, even after one is discontinued.

Should SKUs include the price or supplier?

No: prices change and suppliers switch; codes should describe the item itself.

Is a SKU the same as a barcode?

No: a SKU is your own internal code, while barcodes such as UPC and EAN are registered numbers that identify the product everywhere.
