Rashi Calculator: Find Your Moon Sign (Vedic)
Find your Vedic Moon sign with Lahiri ayanamsa, optional birth time, local sign-change times and a twelve-rashi reference.
Rashi Calculator: Find Your Moon Sign (Vedic): Calculates Chandra rashi, the Moon’s sign in the Lahiri sidereal zodiac. The result pairs the Sanskrit rashi with its English sign name, traditional planetary lord and element. A date alone gives a local-noon reference and a full-day check for sign changes; crossing days show both possible rashis and the local change time. A twelve-rashi table explains the names and divisions, and a share image preserves any uncertainty without birth details. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

How your sidereal Moon sign is computed
The sidereal longitude is the astronomy-engine tropical geocentric apparent longitude minus the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, wrapped into 0–360°. The Lahiri epoch is 23.8570923537° at J2000. The change with time follows the IAU 2006 general precession polynomial, using centuries of Terrestrial Time. The polynomial is checked against Swiss Ephemeris Lahiri reference values from 1900 to 2100; planetary positions are checked against independent Swiss Ephemeris tropical reference charts. Small differences near a boundary can change a label, and uncertain birth details can have a larger effect.
Astronomy Engine (https://github.com/cosinekitty/astronomy) provides the MIT-licensed astronomical calculations. The Swiss Ephemeris programmer documentation (https://www.astro.com/swisseph/swephprg.htm) describes sidereal modes; Swiss Ephemeris is used as an independent reference, not included in this tool. The IAU SOFA collection (https://www.iausofa.org/) documents the IAU precession model. These sources explain the coordinate calculations.
City names and time zones come from GeoNames (https://www.geonames.org/) under CC BY 4.0. Without a selected city, the Moon tools use the visitor’s time zone. Local date searches include daylight-saving changes; historical time-zone uncertainty can affect a result. Calculations run in the browser and do not upload birth details.
The whole local date is searched when no birth time is supplied. The Moon’s longitude is compared with the twelve 30° boundaries and each crossing is located to less than a second. The displayed sign is for local noon; the notice lists both signs if a crossing occurs. Dates with daylight-saving changes are searched over their actual local duration.
The twelve-rashi reference
The twelve rashis are Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces). They are twelve equal 30° arcs of the sidereal zodiac, not the irregular astronomical constellations. Chandra rashi is the rashi containing the Moon.
Traditional lords are Mars, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Saturn and Jupiter. The element sequence is fire, earth, air and water, repeated three times. The reference table shows these cultural classifications. The public-domain Sanskrit Brihat Jataka describes the classical sign and lord conventions. The Positional Astronomy Centre of the India Meteorological Department (https://mausam.imd.gov.in/imd_latest/contents/positional.php) publishes national almanac information using Indian calendar conventions.
How to use it
- Enter a birth date; add a recorded time and city when available.
- Calculate your rashi and check any local sign-change notice.
- Read the traditional lord and element, compare the Western Moon sign and save a card.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my rashi different from my Western Moon sign?
Chandra rashi uses the sidereal zodiac, while a Western Moon sign usually uses the tropical zodiac. Subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24° today, moves the coordinate backwards. The sign can stay the same or become the preceding sign, depending on the Moon’s degree.
Do I need a birth time or city to find my rashi?
A date is enough to check the possible signs in a selected time zone. The city supplies its historical time zone; otherwise your browser’s zone is used. If the Moon crosses a rashi boundary that day, the recorded time is needed to distinguish the two possibilities.
Will North and South Indian charts give different rashis?
No. North Indian charts fix the houses and South Indian charts fix the signs. The Moon occupies the same sidereal sign in both. Open the kundli tool to view either chart style.
Is a rashi the same as a dasha?
No. A rashi is a 30° sidereal sign. A dasha is part of a traditional timing system. The kundli page derives Vimshottari dates from the Moon’s nakshatra and uses a 365.25-day year, with dates only and no predictions.
Does the share card reveal my birth details?
No. Rashi calculations and card creation stay in your browser. The card contains the sign and traditional lord, or both possible signs when the birth time is unknown. It never contains your birth date, time or city.
Does a Moon rashi scientifically describe me?
No. The sign is based on a calculated astronomical longitude, but the lord and element are traditional classifications. They are cultural symbols and do not establish personality traits or future outcomes.
