Placeholder Image Generator

Make placeholder images in any sizes at once, with your own colours and text, and download them as PNG or SVG for mockups, layouts, and ad slots.

Placeholder Image Generator: Each image is a filled rectangle with its size, or your text, centred on it. The text size adapts so that it fits about 80% of the width and 40% of the height. SVG images are written as plain markup, a few hundred bytes each; PNG images are drawn on a canvas in your browser. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Images are drawn in your browser. SVG files stay sharp at any size and are tiny; PNG works everywhere, including email and office documents.

Using placeholders in a layout

Make placeholders the exact size of the final images, so the page does not shift when real ones arrive, and keep them a neutral grey so they are not mistaken for finished design.

When the real images arrive, bring them to size with the image resizer, and check proportions with the aspect ratio calculator.

Embedding SVG placeholders

An SVG placeholder can go straight into an img tag's src as a data URI, which avoids a separate file; the data URI generator makes one from a downloaded SVG.

How to use it

  1. List the sizes you need, such as 1200x630, 300x250.
  2. Choose the background and text colours, and optional text.
  3. Download each image, or all of them, as PNG or SVG.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes are common?

1200 × 630 for link previews on social media, 1080 × 1080 for square posts, and 300 × 250, 728 × 90, and 160 × 600 for standard display ads.

PNG or SVG?

SVG for web mockups, since it is tiny and stays sharp at any zoom; PNG where SVG is not accepted, such as email, slides, or some design tools.

Can I use several lines of text?

Not in the text box, which takes one line; the size label, or a short word such as Logo or Banner, is usually clearest.
