Social Security Number Validator (France, NIR)
Check a French social security number (NIR, numéro de sécurité sociale) and its 2-digit key, and read the sex, year and month of birth, and place of birth it contains.
Social Security Number Validator (France, NIR): The 15 characters are: 1 or 2 for sex, the last two digits of the birth year, the birth month, the department of birth (or 99 for births abroad), the commune or country, a three-digit order number, and the key. The key is 97 minus the remainder of the first 13 digits divided by 97; for Corsica, 2A and 2B count as 19 and 18. Results agreed with the python-stdnum library on 6,000 numbers. The key is 97 minus the remainder of the first 13 digits divided by 97, with Corsica's 2A and 2B counted as 19 and 18. The number also shows sex, year and month of birth, and the department or country of birth. Only the format and key are checked; everything stays in your browser.
Reading a number
In 1 85 07 75 114 456 84, 1 is a man, 85 and 07 are July 1985, 75 is Paris, 114 is the commune code (the 14th arrondissement), 456 is the order of the birth in that commune's register for the month, and 84 is the key.
For Spanish and Mexican identity numbers, see the DNI and NIE validator and the CURP and RFC validator.
Working the key out
Divide 1850775114456 by 97: the remainder is 13, and 97 − 13 = 84. A key always lies between 01 and 97.

Frequently asked questions
Why can the department be 2A or 2B?
Corsica was split into two departments in 1976, Corse-du-Sud (2A) and Haute-Corse (2B). For the key they are counted as 19 and 18.
What does 99 in the department mean?
The person was born outside France; the next three digits are the INSEE code of the country of birth.
Does a valid key mean the number was issued?
No: it means the number is correctly formed. Only the social security services can confirm it belongs to someone.
