Mulch Calculator
Estimate bulk mulch volume and bags for a bed.
Mulch Calculator: Work out mulch volume for a rectangular planting bed and the number of bags needed at your selected spreading depth. The cubic-foot result includes the allowance you enter, so it can also be converted to a bulk order. Enter additional depth needed now, rather than automatically repeating the bed's existing mulch thickness. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Bags to buy (estimate)
22 bags
- Bed area (estimate)
- 160 sq ft
- Mulch volume (estimate)
- 44 cu ft
Bags = ceiling(area × depth ÷ 12 × (1 + waste) ÷ bag coverage)- Every result is an estimate; verify surface preparation, measurements, and local practices before ordering.
- Allow for the stated waste and product-coverage assumptions; openings are deducted only where requested.
- Compaction, settling, substrate condition, cuts, and installation method can change actual quantities.
Formula and worked example
Bags = ceiling(area × depth ÷ 12 × (1 + waste) ÷ bag coverage)
A worked example with sample values:
| Inputs | |
|---|---|
| Bed length | 20 ft |
| Bed width | 8 ft |
| Depth | 3 in |
| Waste allowance | 10% |
| Bag coverage | 2 cu ft/bag |
| Results | |
|---|---|
| Bed area | 160 sq ft |
| Mulch volume | 44 cu ft |
| Bags to buy (estimate) | 22 bags |
Depth, volume and bag count
Let L and W be bed dimensions in feet, D added depth in inches, w allowance in percent and b bag volume in ft³. Volume V = L × W × (D ÷ 12) × (1 + w ÷ 100). Bags = ceiling(V ÷ b). For bulk comparison, yd³ = V ÷ 27.
For a 20 ft × 8 ft bed, area = 160 ft². At an illustrative 3 in added depth, geometric volume = 160 × 3 ÷ 12 = 40 ft³. With a sample 10% allowance, V = 44 ft³. Using example 2 ft³ bags gives 44 ÷ 2 = 22 bags. The same volume is 1.629630 yd³, without an additional bulk-order rounding step.
Choose depth for the plants
The Tree Owner's Manual, hosted by the University of Minnesota (https://trees.umn.edu/sites/trees.umn.edu/files/files/tree_owners_manual_0.pdf), describes mulch placement and keeping it off the trunk. Use planting-specific guidance to choose the layer; the worked example is a volume exercise, not a depth recommendation for every bed.
To compare a metric bulk delivery, use NIST's volume factor (https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811/nist-guide-si-appendix-b-conversion-factors/nist-guide-si-appendix-b8): multiply yd³ by about 0.7645549 for m³. Bags can simplify moving material to separate beds, while bulk is measured as one delivered volume. Compare equal volumes and allow for package rounding before deciding how to order.
How to use it
- Enter measurements using the units shown beside each field.
- Choose the product coverage and allowances for your measured job.
- Calculate, then compare the rounded quantity with your layout and product label.

Frequently asked questions
Do I enter total mulch depth when topping up an existing bed?
Enter the new layer you intend to add. If suitable mulch already remains, entering the whole desired finished depth would overstate the top-up. Check depth in several places and calculate different bed sections separately when the existing layer is uneven.
Does a 2 ft³ bag always cover the same garden area?
No. Coverage depends on depth: area = bag volume ÷ depth in feet. A hypothetical 2 ft³ bag covers 8 ft² at 3 in depth, but 12 ft² at 2 in. Check the product label for its actual volume rather than assuming all bags share the example size.
Should the waste allowance make mulch deeper around trees?
No. An ordering allowance covers distribution losses or measurement uncertainty, not a reason to pile material against trunks. Keep the intended installed layer distinct from surplus bags. Choose a suitable depth for the planting and remove trunk areas from your measured bed footprint.
