Mu Converter (亩 to Hectares and m²)

Convert mu (亩), the unit mainland China uses for farmland and rural land, to hectares, square metres, and acres, along with fen (分) and qing (顷).

Mu Converter (亩 to Hectares and m²): China's market units (市制) fix the chi at 1/3 m, and a mu is 60 square zhang, or 6,000 square chi: 2000/3 m², about 666.67 m². So 15 mu make exactly one hectare, a mu has 10 fen, and 100 mu make one qing. An acre is 4,046.86 m², about 6.07 mu. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

1 mu is 666.67 m², 0.0667 hectares, or 0.1647 acres.

The mu (市亩) is mainland China's everyday unit for farmland and rural plots: 60 square zhang, which is 2000/3 m², about 666.67 m², so exactly 15 mu make a hectare. A mu has 10 fen, and 100 mu make a qing. Taiwan measures land in ping and in jia (甲, about 0.97 hectares) instead.

A worked example

A 30-mu plot is 30 × 2000/3 = 20,000 m², which is 2 hectares or about 4.94 acres.

For Taiwan's ping, use the ping converter; for acres and hectares alone, acres to hectares.

Getting a feel for the size

A football pitch of 105 × 68 m covers 7,140 m², about 10.7 mu, so one mu is a little under a tenth of a pitch.

Do not confuse the mu with the are (公亩), a metric unit of 100 m² that is rarely used today. For floor space in square metres or feet, see the square footage calculator.
