Months Between Dates

Count complete calendar months between two dates.

Months Between Dates: Count completed calendar months between two dates using their day numbers, and see the calendar-day gap alongside the result. An ending month is incomplete until its day number reaches the starting day. This makes a January-to-February interval different from simply dividing its days by thirty. ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Dates are calendar dates at UTC midnight; no local timezone or daylight-saving adjustment is applied.
  2. Results are planning utilities. Public holidays, locale-specific work rules, and company policies are not inferred.
  3. A partial calendar month is discarded; this is not an average-month conversion.

Day-number comparison and worked interval

For dates in forward order, let Ys and Ye be the start and end years, Ms and Me their month numbers, and Ds and De their day numbers. First compute raw months R = 12(Ye − Ys) + Me − Ms. Completed months C = R − 1 when De < Ds; otherwise C = R. For reversed dates, apply the same rule to the forward span and negate C.

Enter 2025-01-31 and 2025-03-30. R = 12(2025 − 2025) + 3 − 1 = 2. Because 30 < 31, C = 2 − 1 = 1 completed month. The full calendar-day gap is 58 days. The widget shows 1 month and 58 calendar days, without converting either output into an average-length month.

Month lengths and endpoint interpretation

A month counter and a month-offset tool answer different questions. The offset tool can shorten the destination day to make it valid; this counter compares the original endpoint day numbers. Neither adds an extra day because both dates appear in the fields. Use calendar days when every individual date step matters.

The US Naval Observatory's calendar introduction (https://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/calendars) describes the Gregorian civil calendar. Here, its months are used as calendar units, without a financial day-count convention, a lunar-month conversion or a promise that every month is equally long.

How to use it

  1. Enter the beginning of the interval as Start date.
  2. Enter the comparison date as End date.
  3. Calculate and compare completed months with the separate calendar-day difference.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 31 January to 28 February not a completed month here?

The ending day number, 28, has not reached the starting day number, 31. This counter therefore discards that partial month, even though adding one month to 31 January would clamp to February's last date.

Does the month result include a fractional remainder?

No. Only whole completed months are returned. The accompanying day difference describes the entire interval; it is not the number of leftover days after subtracting those months.

What does switching the two dates do to the month count?

The calculator counts the forward interval first, then reverses its sign. A span shorter than one completed month stays zero rather than becoming minus one.
