What an llms.txt file contains
llms.txt is a proposed convention (llmstxt.org, 2024) for a short Markdown file at the site root that points language models to the pages worth reading. It is optional, it is not a crawler permission — that remains robots.txt's job — and no AI provider is obliged to read it.
| Part | Rule |
|---|---|
# Site name | One H1 with the project or site name. The only required element. |
> Summary | A blockquote giving the key context in a sentence or two. |
| Paragraphs | Optional notes on how to read the rest of the file. |
## Section | H2 headings, each followed by a list of links: - [Title](url): optional note. |
## Optional | A section whose links can be skipped when context is short. |
Example
# Example Docs
> Example is a payments API. These pages cover setup, the REST reference, and SDKs.
## Guides

## Optional
- [Changelog](https://example.com/changelog.md)Keep it useful
- Link to clean Markdown or plain pages rather than script-heavy ones.
- Prefer a short, curated list over a copy of the sitemap; a longer companion
llms-full.txtcan hold full text. - Use absolute URLs, and re-run this checker after publishing to confirm the links resolve.
- Crawler access is still governed by robots.txt — check it with the robots.txt checker.
How to use it
- Enter a website or direct llms.txt URL.
- Choose Check llms.txt.
- Review availability, structure, declared links, and the raw document.
Privacy & limitations
The public file is checked through TOEA’s API and is not saved. llms.txt is an emerging voluntary convention, not access control and not a guarantee of AI-system behavior.

Frequently asked questions
Is llms.txt required?
No. It is optional and should complement, not replace, normal accessible documentation and crawler controls.
Does this test robots.txt too?
No. Use the Robots.txt or AI Crawler Checker for crawler directives.
Where does llms.txt go?
At the root of the site, as /llms.txt, served as plain text or Markdown. The checker looks there unless you give it a direct URL.
Do AI assistants actually read llms.txt?
Some tools and documentation platforms do, but no major AI provider has committed to it. Treat it as a low-cost aid, not a guarantee of how a model will use your site.
