Kundli Matching: Guna Milan Calculator (Ashtakoota)

Calculate the traditional guna milan total out of 36, inspect all eight kootas, and see the stated rules for Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal dosha.

Kundli Matching: Guna Milan Calculator (Ashtakoota): Guna milan compares the Moon nakshatra and rashi of two people through eight traditional North Indian Ashtakoota tables. The eight maxima add to 36. This page displays the attributes and points for every koota, keeps common traditional exceptions separate from the raw score, and checks a stated Mars-house rule from the Moon and from the lagna when birth time and place are known. It uses a whole-sign Vashya convention; other traditional tables may give different totals. This cultural practice has no scientific basis for assessing relationships and provides no marriage advice. Eight traditional tables. Thirty-six possible points. See each rule behind the total.

Ashtakoota assigns girl and boy roles to directional tables. Person A follows the traditional girl role and Person B the boy role; these are table roles, not a judgement about either person.

This is a cultural tradition without scientific evidence. It does not predict marriage outcomes or provide marriage advice.

Without a city, the date uses UTC. Select a city or change the time zone for the local birth date. A birth time and selected place are needed for the lagna check.

Ashtakoota and the Moon

The eight kootas are traditional classifications used in North Indian horoscope matching. The overview at Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horoscope_matching) describes the cultural setting. Tables and exception rules vary by school.

The Moon positions use the Lahiri sidereal approximation, with the same birth-date and time-zone handling as the kundli and nakshatra tools. A time is requested whenever the selected local date contains a nakshatra or rashi change.

Scoring convention and limits

The Vashya table here uses whole-sign groups, with Sagittarius and Capricorn classed as quadrupeds. Some schools divide those signs into halves. Yoni uses a symmetric 14-animal matrix from zero to four; Gana and Varna retain the traditional girl/boy direction. The displayed raw total is never increased by cancellation rules.

The eight-koota method is historical cultural material. The Encyclopaedia Britannica discussion of astrology (https://www.britannica.com/topic/astrology) provides wider context. This page makes no predictions and gives no marriage advice.

How to use it

  1. Enter each person's birth date, with time and city if known; Person A uses the traditional girl role and Person B the boy role.
  2. If the Moon changes nakshatra or rashi that day, enter a birth time to resolve the possibilities.
  3. Read the total, the eight koota rows and the traditional exceptions, then optionally make an invite or save a card.

Privacy & limitations

Calculations run in your browser. Invites contain only Person A's nakshatra, pada and rashi, plus a first name if you opt in. Cards never contain birth dates, times or cities.

Frequently asked questions

What is guna milan?

Guna milan is the Ashtakoota comparison used in parts of North Indian astrology. It assigns points through Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi, for a maximum of 36. These are traditional classifications, not measurements of a relationship.

Why are the girl and boy roles fixed in the tables?

Some Ashtakoota tables are directional. This page uses Person A for the traditional girl role and Person B for the boy role. Reversing them can change Varna and Gana points in this convention; Tara counts both directions. These roles describe the historical tables.

Does kundli matching need birth time?

The eight kootas use the Moon's nakshatra and rashi. A date alone can establish these when they stay unchanged throughout the local day. If either changes, the page shows the possibilities and asks for time. The Mangal dosha check from the lagna also needs birth time and place.

What does the traditional 18-point threshold mean?

Traditionally, a total of 18 or more is described as acceptable for matching. This page labels below 18, 18 to below 24, 24 to below 32, and 32 to 36 using traditional bands. A threshold is part of the tradition, not evidence or advice about marriage.

What are Nadi and Bhakoot dosha?

In these tables, matching Nadi groups score zero out of eight. Bhakoot distances 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score zero out of seven. Some traditions describe exceptions for the same rashi with different nakshatras, the same nakshatra with different rashis, or a shared rashi lord. Applicable exceptions are listed without changing the score.

How is Mangal dosha checked?

The stated rule checks whether Mars occupies houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from the Moon and, with birth time and place, from the lagna. Each check says present or not present by this rule. Tradition treats it as cancelled when both have it by the same rule; regional definitions vary.

Is kundli matching scientific?

No. Ashtakoota is a cultural tradition without scientific evidence that its points predict relationship or marriage outcomes. We do not advise on marriage.
