Kelvin to Fahrenheit Converter

Convert kelvins to degrees Fahrenheit with a tested affine conversion.

Kelvin to Fahrenheit Converter: Translate an absolute temperature supplied in kelvin into a Fahrenheit reading for a display or report. The result describes the same temperature with another zero point and another degree size. Keep the kelvin source alongside the converted value when documenting a technical measurement. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Writing the complete conversion

If T is measured in kelvin and F in degrees Fahrenheit, F = (T − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32. For 300 K: 300 − 273.15 = 26.85 °C; 26.85 × 9/5 = 48.33; 48.33 + 32 = 80.33 °F. The equivalent expression F = 1.8T − 459.67 shows directly why the conversion is affine rather than proportional.

NIST's temperature reference (https://www.nist.gov/pml/owm/si-units-temperature) lists the exact equation. Kelvin is written K without a degree symbol; the Fahrenheit result uses °F.

Zero and the negative crossover

A kelvin input of zero produces −459.67 °F. Another useful check is 233.15 K, which gives −40 °F and −40 °C. Celsius and Fahrenheit coincide there because solving x = 1.8x + 32 gives x = −40. These checkpoints test both the offset and the multiplier, whereas checking only a temperature interval tests the multiplier alone.

How to use it

  1. Enter the temperature in kelvins.
  2. Read the converted degrees Fahrenheit value as it updates.
  3. Use the common values or open the reverse conversion to cross-check.

Frequently asked questions

Why does multiplying kelvin by 1.8 give the wrong reading?

It changes the interval size but leaves the zero point uncorrected. The complete relation is F = 1.8T − 459.67. For 300 K, multiplying gives 540; subtracting 459.67 then gives 80.33 °F.

Are 273 K and 273.15 K interchangeable here?

They are different readings. Exactly 273.15 K converts to 32 °F; 273 K converts to 31.73 °F. Rounding the source before conversion can shift the answer. Choose precision based on the measurement rather than replacing the exact offset with 273.

How large is a 10 K change in Fahrenheit?

It is an 18 °F change. Apply the factor 9/5 without the −459.67 offset. That subtraction belongs to converting an absolute reading. A kelvin change and a Celsius change have equal magnitude, so a 10 °C difference gives the same 18 °F interval.
