Flooring Calculator

Estimate flooring area and boxes for a rectangular room.

Flooring Calculator: Turn a rectangular room's measured floor area into a material allowance and a whole-box purchase count. Enter coverage from the exact flooring package you have selected. The calculation helps compare how changing a cutting allowance or box size affects the quantity, including spare material left by package rounding. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Every result is an estimate; verify surface preparation, measurements, and local practices before ordering.
  2. Allow for the stated waste and product-coverage assumptions; openings are deducted only where requested.
  3. Compaction, settling, substrate condition, cuts, and installation method can change actual quantities.

Formula and worked example

Boxes = ceiling(area × (1 + waste) ÷ box coverage)

Floor area to boxes

Let L and W be room dimensions in feet, w overage in percent and C usable box coverage in ft². Floor area A = L × W. Material area M = A × (1 + w ÷ 100). Boxes = ceiling(M ÷ C). The allowance applies to area before the box count is rounded.

For a 20 ft × 12 ft room, A = 240 ft². Taking an illustrative 10% allowance gives M = 240 × 1.10 = 264 ft². With example coverage of 20 ft² per box, 264 ÷ 20 = 13.2 boxes, so the output is 14 boxes. Changing coverage to 22 ft² would make the same allowance exactly 12 boxes.

Use the installed coverage unit

NIST's SI conversion table (https://www.nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811/nist-guide-si-appendix-b-conversion-factors/nist-guide-si-appendix-b8) gives 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m². A package labelled in m² must have its coverage divided by 0.09290304 before it is entered in the ft² box field. Converting only the room area would mix incompatible units.

Draw the room boundaries and planned plank direction before ordering, including closets that receive the same flooring. This calculator does not choose expansion clearances, stagger joints or optimise offcuts. Underlay, adhesive and trims have their own coverage or length requirements; check the product label for each rather than treating them as extra flooring boxes.

How to use it

  1. Enter measurements using the units shown beside each field.
  2. Choose the product coverage and allowances for your measured job.
  3. Calculate, then compare the rounded quantity with your layout and product label.

Frequently asked questions

What flooring waste percentage should I enter?

Base it on your layout, plank direction, cuts, defects and spare pieces for later repairs. Diagonal layouts and many small recesses can consume offcuts differently from a plain rectangle. The displayed 10% example is not universal guidance; check the product label and installation instructions.

Can I use this for an L-shaped room or several rooms?

Divide the footprint into rectangles that do not overlap. Add their material areas and then round the combined amount to boxes if all surfaces use the same product. Rounding every small section separately can overstate a shared order, while different products need separate counts.

Why do 14 boxes cover more than the stated material area?

Boxes cannot be bought fractionally in this estimate. Fourteen example boxes at 20 ft² each provide 280 ft², exceeding the 264 ft² allowance. That package surplus is separate from cutting waste. Check whether the coverage includes usable installed area for your exact product.
