Commission Calculator

Calculate a commission amount and sales remaining after commission.

Commission Calculator: Calculate a payment based on one commission percentage applied to eligible sales. The result also shows sales minus that commission, useful for separating the payment from the sales amount used as its base. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Formula and worked example

Commission = sales × commission rate ÷ 100

A worked example with sample values:

Inputs
Sales$10,000.00
Commission rate5%
Results
Commission amount$500.00
Sales after commission$9,500.00

One-rate commission worked through

Commission = eligible sales × commission percentage ÷ 100. Sales after commission = eligible sales − commission. On sales of 10,000 at 5%, commission is 10,000 × 5 ÷ 100 = 500, leaving 10,000 − 500 = 9,500. These sample values describe arithmetic, not a typical compensation plan.

OpenStax treats commission as a percentage application to a sales base (https://openstax.org/books/prealgebra-2e/pages/6-3-solve-sales-tax-commission-and-discount-applications). A zero rate or zero eligible sales gives zero commission; a 100% rate assigns the entire sales base to the commission output.

Marginal bands and retroactive rates

As a separate tiered example, suppose an agreement pays 5% on the first 10,000 and 8% on the next 5,000. Marginal commission is 500 + 400 = 900 on total sales of 15,000. Applying 8% to the whole total instead gives 1,200; that would represent a retroactive rate arrangement, rather than those marginal bands.

The widget cannot select a tier, split sales into bands, apply a cap or add a quota bonus. You can use it once per band if the base and rate are already known, keeping the intermediate results before adding them. Confirm the payout period and treatment of cancelled sales in the agreement when preparing a commission statement.

How to use it

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator support tiered commission?

No. It applies one rate to the full sales amount. For marginal tiers, calculate the sales within each band separately and add the commissions. For a retroactive plan, determine the applicable rate from the contract first, then apply it to the eligible total.

Is Sales after commission my take-home pay?

No. It is the sales base minus the calculated commission, not the salesperson's salary or the business's profit. Base pay, deductions, tax, product costs and other expenses are not included in either output.

Should I include refunds, discounts and tax in sales?

Use the eligible-sales definition in your commission agreement. Some items may change that base, but the tool has no separate adjustments or clawback fields. Enter the final non-negative eligible amount and the contractual rate rather than assuming the invoice total always qualifies.
