ARPU Calculator

Calculate average revenue per active user for a chosen reporting period.

ARPU Calculator: Find how much revenue each active user represents during a month, quarter or other reporting window. ARPU divides the revenue you enter by your chosen user count; it describes an average across that population, rather than what every individual paid. Working formulaARPU = revenue ÷ active users
ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Revenue and active users cover the same reporting period.
  2. Choose one user-count convention and use it consistently across comparisons.

Formula and worked example

ARPU = revenue ÷ active users

A worked example with sample values:

Inputs
Period revenue$80,000.00
Active users2,000
Results
Average revenue per user$40.00

Revenue per user: formula and example

ARPU = period revenue ÷ active users. With revenue of 80,000 and 2,000 active users, 80,000 ÷ 2,000 = 40 per user. The output has the currency of the revenue input and the time window of your records. A positive user count is required; zero revenue gives zero ARPU.

OpenStax discusses the corresponding revenue-per-customer ratio (https://openstax.org/books/principles-marketing/pages/2-4-marketing-plan-progress-using-metrics) as a way to compare periods and customer segments. For this calculation, decide whether a user means an account, a person or a subscription, then use that unit consistently.

Reading changes in the average

A higher ARPU can arise from more revenue, fewer counted users or a different mix of customers. Examine both underlying totals before interpreting a movement. If you combine segments, divide their combined revenue by their combined user count rather than taking an unweighted average of their ARPUs.

Revenue per user is not profit per user. Delivery costs, acquisition spending and overhead do not appear as separate deductions here. Use the same treatment of refunds and recognition timing in both comparison periods; mixing billed revenue with collected cash can change the numerator without any change in usage.

How to use it

  1. Enter values that cover the same scope and reporting period.
  2. Choose a display currency when the calculation includes money.
  3. Calculate, then review the formula and assumptions beside the result.

Frequently asked questions

Should ARPU include users who paid nothing?

Include them if they belong to the active-user population you are measuring. Dividing only by paying users produces average revenue per paying user instead. Keep that distinction in the report title so a change in the denominator is not mistaken for revenue growth.

Do I use month-end users or average users?

The calculator accepts the count you supply and cannot choose a reporting convention. An average count can reflect users joining and leaving during the month; a period-active count measures everyone active in that window. Document which definition you use before comparing periods.

Can I multiply monthly ARPU by twelve?

That gives a projection only if revenue per user and the user-count convention stay comparable each month. Annual revenue divided by annual active users can differ because the same person may appear in several monthly counts. Calculate the annual measure from its own totals.
